Patriotic Pinwheels

I wanted to squeeze in a kid-craft for the 4th of July.  Before it was too late.

"America day" as my daughter calls it, is surprisingly one of her favorite holidays!  She talks about it a LOT!  And insists on having flags to wave and a special outfit to wear!  Too cute!

So for fun we found some patriotic scrapbook paper and made a few pinwheels!  They are so super easy.  And a great activity for the kids to do.  But, depending on the age, they might need some adult help, and certainly supervision!

You will need:

  • Paper
  • Wooden dowels
  • Thumb tacks
  • Scissors
To do:

Cut your paper into squares.  I made 6"x6", 5"x5" and a 4"x4" squares.

Next, cut each square starting at the outside corner, headed into the middle.  Stop just short of the middle though.  Do this for all four corners.

Using your tack, pin every other corner into the center of the paper.

Push the tack into your wooden dowel.

Let your kids enjoy these fun patriotic pinwheels!!

Cake Pops with CakePop Maker!

If you missed my post yesterday, I posted about how to make donut holes with the babycakes Cake Pop Maker! They are so super yummy and so super easy! Check it out here.

Today, I tackled making Cake Pops!

I have said before that while the concept of cake balls intrigues me, I always felt like they were a lot of work. To bake a cake, crumble it up, mix it with icing, form balls, put on sticks and then dip in chocolate just seemed overwhelming to me!

Especially with two small children, it is hard for me to sit and focus on completing a task with so many steps in my house. Please tell me I am not the only one who has this problem!?!?!

But when I saw the babycakes Cake Pop Maker by Select Brands, I was thoroughly intrigued!  And since my donut holes were so simple to make, I just had a good feeling about making cake pops this morning!

First, I made my batter using the recipe for vanilla cake pops that came with it!  Simple.  Easy.  Looked delish.

I scooped the batter into a large bag, cut the tip off, and filled each crevice of my pre-heated Cake Pop Maker with batter.

3-4 minutes later...look at how PERFECT these are!  Perfect, round, yummy!

Once they cooled, I dipped my pop sticks in a bit of melted chocolate and then put them into the cake balls.  Next, I placed them in the freezer for a few minutes to help the chocolate set, and to make the cake balls a bit easier to dip.

Then I just started dipping my cake balls in melted chocolate.  YUM!

The Cake Pop maker came with a handy little stand where you can put them to harden, but I made too many cake pops so I also used a foam block so that I could dip them all at the same time.

We added sprinkles to a few of them for fun.

Ok.  My daughter and I had a LOT of fun with sprinkles!  But what can I say...cake, chocolate and sprinkles are a winning combination!!

Honestly, I am in LOVE with my babycakes Cake Pop maker!  It is so easy to use and the results are fabulous!!  There is not a single thing that I can think of that I don't like about it!

I LOVE MY CAKE POP MAKER!!

It is also easy to clean, and small enough to store that it is a perfect addition to my baking appliances!

Have I mentioned that I love my cake pop maker!?!

Now...I do have to give one small disclaimer.  Babycakes has PERFECTED their recipes for this machine.  I did try my Cake Pop maker out using a white cake mix.  The results were not as exciting.  I had issues with them rising well, spilling out of their crevices, and to be honest, they were not as pretty and round...they were a bit pointy on the tops.

That being said, they still tasted yummy!  But they just don't rise quite the same.  I think with a bit of experimenting I could get it to work though if I really wanted to.

But since it doesn't take much more time to make batter from scratch (babycake's recipes are soooooo easy!), I would stick to using their recipes for this machine.

I mean...come on...who wouldn't want to eat one of these yummy balls of goodness!!

DELISH!

I love my Babycakes Cake Pop Maker by Select Brands!  It is awesome!

Which means I am so thrilled to be able to GIVE ONE AWAY!!!

So come back tomorrow and enter to win one of these amazing machines!!

Until then, I want to know, what is your favorite flavor of cake?

You can see the rest of my review of this product here.

A big thanks to Select Brands for sending me a Cake Pop Maker to test and review!

Donut Holes with Babycakes Cake Pop Maker!

I have been eyeing the Babycakes Cake Pop Maker for quite some time.  But to be honest, I wasn't so sure about it.  I know cake pops are so popular...but I personally have never made them because, well, they seemed like a lot of work, and I like to keep things SIMPLE!

So when I saw the Cake Pop Maker, I was intrigued.  I wondered if it really was easy to make cake pops with this.  I also was so curious about how it worked, if it worked, and what they tasted like!  My first thought when I saw the product was "You could make donut holes with this!!"  Yum!

When Select Brands offered to send me a Cake Pop Maker to try out, I jumped at the opportunity!  Literally, I was jumping and dancing...I am so glad no one could see me!

So I thought my first project I should make with this should be donut holes!  And I have to admit, I was astounded!

I took Father's Day as an opportunity to give these a whirl!  My husband loves donut holes so I wanted to surprise him with some yummy donut holes for Father's Day breakfast!

I was slightly worried since I had never used this product before and since I had never made donuts before!  Thankfully my husband is used to me experimenting!  But I was sure hoping that this product was as easy to use as it seemed to be!

So I unpacked my Cake Pop Maker and found a great package inside!  In the box came the cute purple cake pop maker, an easy to understand instruction booklet, pop sticks, a cake pop cooling stand and a non-scratch fork to help get the cake pops out of the maker!

I followed this donut recipe on the Babycake website.  But at this point I still wondered if they would look pretty and round like the photos.  I worried about my ability to create an end-result that looked and tasted good!

I was AMAZED!  Look at how beautiful these look!!  Seriously!  I can't believe how perfectly round they turned out!  These are just incredible looking!!

The recipe was simple to follow and the cake pop maker was a breeze to use!  And it took mere minutes to bake 12 donut holes!!

I love love love my Cake Pop Maker!!

The first batch I took immediately out of the cake pop maker and coated them in powdered sugar!  Yum!

I also decided to make a batch of chocolate donut holes.  Mmmm...yum!

I coated the rest of my donuts in a simple glaze I made with powdered sugar, milk and vanilla!  These tasted incredible!

I was so amazed at how SIMPLE these were to make!  In minutes I had enough donut holes to feed a small army and they were delish!  The recipe was simple to follow and the result was an amazing donut that tasted great!  They were lighter then a "cake" baked-type of donut but not quite like a fried donut...almost like a mix of the two.  They were yummy!

But most important, the Cake Pop Maker was so simple to use!!  It functions in a similar manner to a waffle iron but makes Cake Pops and Donut Holes!  How awesome is that?!

It is easy to use, simple to clean, and makes perfect round balls of deliciousness in about 3 minutes!

That's exactly what these are: Perfect Round Balls of Deliciousness!

Amazing!

Can you tell how much I LOVE my new Cake Pop Maker?!?  It is my new favorite kitchen gadget!  I love love love it!

Tomorrow I will be experimenting with making Cake Pops with my Cake Pop Maker, and Thursday I am so lucky to be able to give one of my lucky readers their own Cake Pop Maker!!  Seriously!!

So, I want to know, what is the first thing you would make if you won this Cake Pop maker??

Flag Pops

Anything is better on a stick right?  Well, this is a super simple way to make some cute, yummy Flag Pops for the 4th of July!  This would also be a great project to have your kids help with!

You just need a few ingredients:

  • Store bought Rice Krispie treats (You will want the store bought ones because they are stiffer and will hold up, home made ones are typically too soft to stay on a stick well!)
  • A can of white icing
  • Gel icing in red, white and blue
  • Lollypop sticks

  1. Put the Rice Krispie treat on a stick
  2. Using a knife, cover the treat with white icing
  3. Use the gel icings to decorate like flags
So simple.  So cute.  So festive.  So fun for your kids to make!!

How did you spend your weekend?

My weekend started off well.  But Saturday night, our little boy started wheezing and his breathing became labored.  So off to the ER I went with him.

The ER is not what I had in mind for my Saturday night.

He ended up being admitted for the night and one of the meds they gave him to help open up his lungs gave him energy.  At midnight, he was still going strong!  Seriously!  He was playing and laughing and literally jumping in the crib!  It was a bit funny.  Neither of us got much sleep that night.

The good news is is that nothing is majorly wrong.  He is generally a healthy little boy.  But we have a lot of asthma in our family and while it is impossible to diagnose asthma in a small child, they think that something must have triggered some asthma in him.

So we are home now with a nebulizer and a schedule for breathing treatments for a few days.

I had great plans for my little blog this weekend, but it didn't happen.  Instead I had my first all-nighter with my son :)  I am prepping early for the teenage years I suppose!  ha ha ha!

I am going to try to get a "crafty" post up later today, but if it doesn't happen, know that I am here, probably recovering from not sleeping much this weekend.

So, what did you do this weekend?  Something fun I hope!!

Vinyl Giveaway & Simply Link {Party}

I was so excited the other day to hit 1,000 followers!  Thank you so much to all 1,000 of you (and now all 1,051!!)  Wow!  Thank you so much!!

To celebrate, I have arranged a few GREAT GIVEAWAYS!  So keep checking back for the next couple of Friday's and see what I'm giving away!  It will be a fun next couple of weeks!

Today, I am so excited to host a giveaway from Expressions Vinyl!

I know many of you use vinyl for decorating, scrap booking or crafting.  And I personally know how expensive vinyl can be at the local craft store, and I sometimes have trouble finding the color I want.  Expressions Vinyl is a great resource for vinyl.  Their selection is like none other I've seen and their prices are unbeatable!  Here's a little bit about their company:

Expressions Vinyl is an independent seller, they are not tied to any craft cutter brand therefore, they can offer you great crafting vinyl at really low prices.  They sell the same brand of vinyl that is sold by Provo Craft.

And you know, if you don't have to have a vinyl cutter, you can cut vinyl with a utility or exacto knife, so you don't need a cutter to use vinyl!

One of my favorite things about Expressions Vinyl is that they carry a variety of sizes of sheet vinyl as well as vinyl by the roll.  Also they carry vinyl suitable for the Cricut and Silhouette in over 50 colors!!  50 colors!!!

And you can get sheets of high quality vinyl starting as low as $0.99!!!  Seriously!

So what do you think?!  Ready for a GIVEAWAY!?!

PLAY Shadow Box

I am still trying to figure out my son's room.  It is in desperate need of decoration.  Girls are so easy in my opinion, but I have a bit harder of a time finding cute boy things.

I saw an amazing idea for a shadow box several months ago that I thought would be perfect for a little boy's room.  Sadly, I can not find the link to it anymore.  So using my memory and a whole lot of creativity, I figured out how to make my own version of a PLAY Shadowbox for my son's room!

Here is my PLAY Shadow Box!!!

This was a lot of fun to make!

First I took a left over piece of wood I had from another project and cut it down to the correct size.

Next I took 1"x1" and made a "frame" to fit on top of my wood  I enlisted my hubby's help to nail gun the wooden frame to my board.  He also was really sweet and puttied it for me too!  What a sweetheart!

Third, I painted my shadow box blue using craft paint.
Fourth, I sanded the edges and applied a coat of stain to the whole thing and let it dry completely.

Fifth, I cut my truck out of cream vinyl, and my "play" out of red vinyl and applied the vinyl to the shadowbox.   (see my tutorial on how to apply vinyl)

Last, I used a rub on, satin finish polyurethane finish on the entire project and let it dry completely!

Don't you LOVE how it turned out?!?

I love my PLAY Shadow box and it is perfect for my son's room!!

(PS - if you are looking for great quality and reasonable priced vinyl, check out Expressions Vinyl)

Star Topiaries: 4th of July Edition

I have been waiting very patiently to show these to you!  I had this idea months ago and have been working on them, but I didn't want to show them too far in advance of the 4th of July, or "America Day" as my daughter so aptly calls it!

But here they are...my 4th of July Star Topiaries!!  (or should I call them "America Day Topiaries! hahaha!)

These are so super simple to make.  But they do take a little bit of time.  But it was well worth the time it took because I think they are so cute!

First, you will need three styrofoam balls.  I used 5" balls.
I decided to paint them in case you saw a bit of the styrofoam peaking out from underneath the stars.  This is not necessary...but I'm not going to lie, I am a little obsessive like that sometimes!

I didn't have red or blue spray paint, but I did have craft paint.  So I actually just used craft paint and a good 'ole foam brush and painted my styrofoam balls, one blue and one red.  The other I left white.

Second, using a star paper punch, I punched out a lot of stars.  I think I used 3-4 sheets of 12"x12" scrapbook paper per topiary.  I actually found fun paper that was double sided, one side was a bit shimmery and the other was a matte finish.  So I decided to use both sides for my topiaries.

Third, I placed two stars together and put a pearl-top pin through them and started pinning them into the Styrofoam, overlapping the stars as I went.

Fourth, after all of the stars were pinned into place, I took a wooden dowel and stuck it in the bottom of my topiary.  I used a bit of hot glue to secure the dowel in place.

Fifth, I secured additional styrofoam into the bottom of three metal pails with lots of hot glue.  And then I inserted the other end of the wooden dowel into the foam in the pail and secured that with hot glue also.

Lastly, I hid the Styrofoam in the pail with a bit of crinkled paper.

Aren't these just too cute??  I love my 4th of July America Star Topiaries!

Have you started decorating for the 4th of July yet?
