Let's Talk about Fireplaces

It all started a couple of months ago...when my son accidentally knocked over our fireplace tool set shattering a tile by our fireplace. Now, we did not select the tiles when our home was built. They weren't ugly, but they aren't super pretty or expensive either. So instead of just replacing the one tile...we decided to complicated things and replace all of the tile surrounding the fireplace with a nicer, larger tile!

It has been a really fun project, and we have learned a lot. I can't wait to share it all with you...as soon as we are done with it. But I wanted to take this opportunity, while I am thinking about my fireplace to talk to you about fireplaces and hearths.

For centuries, families have referred to the fireplace as the hearth and sometimes even the "heart of the home." Before kitchens became the gathering place, the fireplace (where the food was cooked) was the heart of the home where everyone gathered to eat, talk about their days and tell stories.

Today, since we cook in the kitchen and flip a switch to turn on the fireplace our customs have changed. My family always make a point to have family dinner together as often as possible and chat about our days and we are always looking for new activities to do together as a family.

In a recent article called "10 Ways to Improve Family Communication" by LDS.ORG, the author gives advice on how families can build better communication. The article encourages parents to make the home a haven and sites a survey in which men were asked what they wanted in their homes. The results showed that they preferred tranquility at home to an expensive home or lavish home decor. The author concludes by saying the home should foster peace, and that creating a peaceful climate in the home is vital to the family’s ability to grow together as a unit.

One of the reasons I love designing, decorating and creating is because I feel like it is one way to help create a beautiful home. I know that a beautiful home can feel more comfortable and provide a wonderful atmosphere for families to grow closer together. My home isn't filled with expensive things: I love fixing up a piece of furniture I found on Craigslist, but I am slowly working to make it OUR home. And a place where love, peace and beauty are present.

I am always looking for ways to bring my family closer together, to give us those bonding experiences and one day, we would love to install a fire pit outside. Like a fireplace of old inside, fire pits outside can become the new center of family activities during nice weather. A place for family and friends to gather, talk and bond.

{via}

From a designer's point of view, fire pits can be beautiful focal pieces to your outdoor landscaping. They can provide a hearth to gather family and friends around and they can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. And one of the things I think about most when envisioning my one-day fire pit, is the style of it. I want to be sure to pick a fire pit style that matches my home's interior style so that the interior and exterior design styles match and flow.

If you are a DIYer or an avid researcher, you can probably come up with a lot of great designs that would be a perfect compliment to your backyard. You can also find great ideas and resources from sites like www.AllBackYardFun.com etc to find great fire pits, fire place inserts and other accessories.

So while I continue to work on setting our tile and leveling it tonight I hope you will take a moment to think about what the center and the heart of your home is and please take a moment to leave me a comment and tell me what family activities you do to bond your family together!

And don't forget to join me tomorrow for a giveaway so HUGE you aren't going to want to miss it!!  Over $3,000 in prizes to makeover your home!

Heart Candy Jar

Pinterest has officially made me feel late for Valentine's Day.  And it's not even February.

Just sayin'

So I took a trip to the Dollar store, gathered a few supplies and a pretty can of pink spray paint from the hardware store and got to work making my first Valentine's Day craft this year!  A really cute and really simple Heart Candy Jar on a pedestal!

To make one of these cute pedestal candy dishes, you will need:

  • Heart Dish (I found mine at the Dollar Tree Store)
  • Glass Candlestick Holder (from the Dollar Tree Store)
  • E6000 Glue
  • Spray Paint (I used Rust-Oleum in Berry Pink)

First, spray paint the glass candle stick holder.

Tip: Turn your candle stick holder upside down to spray paint it.  This will avoid getting paint on the top of the candle stick holder.  If too much paint gets on there, the glue won't stick as well.

After the paint has dried, use E6000 to adhere the candle stick holder to the heart dish.

Tip:  Lay a few heavy books on top of the heart dish while the glue dries.  This will ensure a secure bond.

Fill with your favorite Valentine's Day treats!

And there you have a simple and easy Heart Candy Dish on a pedestal!

If you like this, would you please take a moment to Pin It?  Thanks!

My Fashion Goals for 2013

This post brought to you by No nonsense. All opinions are 100% mine.

I realize that I haven't talked about any of my blogging or other goals for 2013 yet, but over the last 6 months, fashion has been on my mind  a lot more.  I used to be in style.  A long time ago.  Before the constant body changes that go along with having kids and when I was...dare I say it...younger.  And, I don't care about having the latest, must-have trend, but I am trying to figure out what MY style is and what clothes I would love to add to my wardrobe should the occassion arrise.

So I've set a few goals for myself, fashion-wise for 2013.  Now so I sound materialistic, please note that the last place I went shopping was Target, Forever 21 was before that.  I don't often spend a lot of money on clothing, definitly not much on "trendy" items.  And I maybe go shopping two times a year for myself, with a very limited budget.  Seriously.  So I plan to accomplish my goals this year, on a BUDGET!

So here are a few simple goals I've set for myself Fashion-wise for this year.

  1. Find a pair of dark brown leather knee-high boots I LOVE.  (After a year and a half of searching I am excited to say I finally found these last week!)
  2. Add more color to my wardrobe.  (When I buy items I love, I tend to buy neutral, so I own a lot of brown and grey.  I want to expand and add more color!)
  3. Don't be afraid to mix colors in new and interesting ways.  (Yup, I'm not always great at having the vision for this so I am practicing this skill with clothes I already own!)
  4. Buy a skinny belt, and wear it on top of a shirt.  (Mission accomlished!  And can I just tell you how proud of myself I am for doing this!?)
  5. Buy a pair of leggings and successfully wear them while looking stylish and age appropriate.

#1 and #4 are already completed!  #3 is a constant work in progress for me.  I am always trying to expand my combinations of clothes I already own to make my clothing go further but I am happy to say I am getting better at it.  #2 will take some time but the last cardi I purchased (from Target) was a raspberry pink, so that counts for color imo!

#5.  #5 I have been stewing on for several years.  Leggings.  I love them in theory.  I love them on other people.  But I am a little nervous to wear leggings myself.  I BARELY got on the skinny jean bandwagon, like a year ago.  So.  I realize I take some time to warm up to fashion trends like this, but it is time.

It is time to take the plunge, buy leggings, and figure out how to successfully wear them, as a woman.  So for fun, I played around with a few style boards at Polyvore and came up with this cute outfit that would incorporate leggings in a cute and stylish way, and add a little color to my outfit too!

What I didn't realize though was that No nonsense, along with selling cute colorful tights, also sells leggings!!  Seriously.  No nonsense sells fun, basic leggings at affordable prices at many locations (food stores, drug stores and mass retailers.)  And No nonsense brand means that there are affordable leggings which is an important part of my accomplishing my goal for the year!!

No nonsense has teamed up with Jill Martin (a style expert) to provide fashion tips, style boards and many ideas to women of how to be fashionable with tights and leggings.  So not only will No nonsense be easy accessible and affordable, but Jill Martin will ensure that we know how to wear these fashionable items!  You can see more about how Jill Martin is getting involved with No nonsense in this video:

So wish me luck on accomplishing the rest of my 2013 Fashion Goals!!  I am kind of excited to go shopping for my first pair of leggings!
