Welcome to Day 2 of my SPRING CLEAN WEEK here at Simply Designing! Today I am really excited to have Barbara from Chase the Star here to show off 2 fabulous DIY Cleaning Products that really work: DIY Soap Scum Remover and DIY Carpet Stain Remover. I can't wait to try both of these ideas, they just look amazing! Enjoy!

--------------------------------------------------------------
I have soap scum. And carpet stains. Other housekeeping issues too, but those are undeniably at the top of my list of things that irritate me the most (I lie, it's really laundry, but these two are close runners up). I'm always looking for something to help me conquer these enemies once and for all, tons of effort and many dollars later, zilch.
One night I was scrolling through Pinterest (Pin addict) and wouldn't you believe that I came across a DIY soap scum remover, made out of Dawn (the blue kind) and Vinegar. Say wha? Dawn? Check! Vinegar? Check! Spray bottle? A quick trip to the drugstore, and check!

How to DIY Soap Scum Remover

Mix equal parts of each in a spray bottle (the mixture turns into a gel)
Spray all over the tub and tile and walk away (this can take a minimum of 30 minutes, or longer if desired).
Go back and wipe it all off with a sponge, and rinse it off.
Run a bath and enjoy your tub!
Tonight, when I accidentally burned the bottom of the rice pot (whoopsey-daisy), I sprayed this mixture on it and let it sit for a couple of hours, and just softly went over it with a sponge, and it came right off!
I was so impressed with my new DIY Soapscum Remover, I had to run a Pin search for carpet stain remover! What with cream colored carpets in my living room and a kid who thinks it's o.k to wear cleats in the house after baseball practice, one who runs in and out all day without removing his shoes, a husband, a cat and a dog...enough said.
Here's what I found....

How to DIY Carpet Stain Remover

You'll need:
A bottle of ammonia
An iron
Hot water
An old towel
Mix the hot water (nuke about 30 seconds), with equal parts of ammonia.
Spray the mixture liberally over the stain and throw the towel over it.
Go over the towel with a hot iron for a few seconds.
Lift the towel up to see that the stain has transferred from your carpet (or rug!) to the towel.
AH.MAYZE.ING!
This worked for me when I was painting the kid's bathroom and accidentally tracked navy blue paint on my very light carpet. Of course I didn't take pics of the incident (sigh), but I now have a lovely blue stain on my raggedy old towel, and my carpets are again like new!
Saved a few bucks (a lot over the long run), used stuff I already had (minus the spray bottles, which I now make sure I always have), and I can leave the mixture under the sink for future use, win, win, win! It's Spring cleaning time, what DIY cleaners have you used??

I use the Dawn/vinegar combination all the time and have for years. I didn't know about the carpet stain but will copy it over so I remember it. xo Diana

Thank you for the Carpet Stain Remover recipe. It worked perfectly good in my case. My boys spilled some of their 'magic potions' in the living room and as it was hard to tell what this solution was made of, I took a risk and used this recipe to clean the stains. The result was great. Thank you for sharing!
