DIY Spice Rack

As the cultural norm shifts more and more to fresh and homemade cooking, I know you are accumulating spices beyond the twirly spice thingy you got for your wedding. Where to put them? You have to be able to see them. And pretty much every solution on Pinterest is SO CUTE, but again, only accommodates about half of your spice collection.
I think spice jars can be pretty, but let me tell you…I went through that phase of getting all matching spice jars, and then I wasted a lot of time refilling the nice jars from jars that I bought at the store. I finally decided that I need to use the jars I bought the spices in, and find a cabinet to put them in and give up on “spices as décor”.
Every one of you has a nice upper cabinet right next to the stove. I suggest you move the first shelf up a little and prepare to solve all your spice problems. Here is what you need to do:
First, measure the width of the inside of your cabinet. With this measurement, go to your local home improvement store and find 2x3 studs. As you may know, 2x4s are the standard. So, 2x3s are not stocked in all stores. 2x2s are easier to find also, but they don’t work well. I tried them and don’t recommend.
Now, here is where your math skills come in (or whip out your Iphone calculator). You need 12 boards cut to the width of the inside of your cabinet. And this is IMPORTANT: cut the boards about ½ inch shorter than your cabinet width.
So, if you find 8ft boards, you will have 96 inches to cut from. You figure out how many to buy. I don’t have a bunch of power tools at home, so I like to have them cut it at the store (most will do it free, some for a fee).
After cutting you will have 12 boards for your cabinet. Now take out the shelf above temporarily so you have room to get your boards in. You need to stack 6 boards against the back wall. Then 4 in front of that, and 2 in front of that.
Now you have 4 levels of spice-topia!
