Everyone dreams of walking into a furniture shop and saying 'I'll take that entire lounge suite, those curtains, that dining table with X chairs and six of the red cushions – deliver them tomorrow!'

Unfortunately most of us can only afford one major purchase every six months to a year, and many more of us rely on friends, neighbors and family cast-offs to keep us going while we save. This can result in a house that looks more like a furniture storage area than a friendly and welcoming residence. However there are many quick and easy tips that can help to bring each room into harmony without breaking the bank or taking up too much time.
Use Paint and Wallpaper to Create Amazing Effects
If your house is awkwardly proportioned you may feel that it will never look stunning and elegant, but design defects can be radically minimized by the careful use of strong contrasting paints and wallpaper. The purple stripes in this child's bedroom give the room greater height, which is excellent as the decorator is working in a constrained space and has compensated by going up instead, as seen by the bunk bed and tall cupboard. The stripes add height and actively work to open the room out.

Using a similar optical illusion, this fabulous and cheerful striped runner makes this small balcony look impossibly long.

If your living room has a large protruding fireplace it can be put into proportion by the use of a darker or stronger shade of paint than is used in the rest of the room, or by the addition of tall bookcases. A tall bookcase will 'tame' the fireplace and make it fit into the room more easily. Check some fine range of bookcases at shop4furniture.net.
Place Furniture to Show It Off Beautifully
It can be tempting, especially in smaller rooms, to put in basic furniture and simply spread it out as much as possible, lining the walls and leaving as big a space as possible in the middle. However, this policy can result in your living room looking like a bare and drab waiting room. Even if you have to keep furniture small and plain do try to add at least one signature piece, a large and lovely item that will draw the eye and immediately gives the room a focal point. This glamorous piece brings a touch of elegance to its surroundings, enlivening the ambiance, and the rest of the room can be subtly shifted to work around it, which will instantly create a warm, welcoming and sensual room.

The Finishing Touches Can Make All the Difference
Nearly every room has enough space for ornamentation of some kind and benefits from pictures on the wall. Hang large mirrors in small rooms to create the impression of nearly double the space. You may purchase a stylish one from Chandeliers and Mirrors. Plus you may put stripes where they can lengthen short rooms or shorten long narrow ones. Wall units are incredibly useful and versatile, working well against walls or across large rooms as informal dividers.

If the rooms are really very cramped and you cannot spare any space for ornaments or decorative pieces, then make the most of the walls, use them as a canvas to express yourself and to make an exciting and textured backdrop to the room.

Where possible pick out ornaments and small touches in colors and tones that match or complement those found in the larger furniture items or the curtains, this will help to draw the room into a unified whole.
Use these tips in your home and you will be amazed at how just a few changes can warm, brighten and pull together a room, creating a safe haven for family and a welcoming sight for friends and neighbors.
