Adding Color To Your Home with Fat Quarter Accent Pillows {Color My Home Summer Blog Series}

Welcome to Day 6 of my Summer Blog Series:  Color my Home!  I have an amazing line up of fabulous bloggers who will be sharing how they incorporate Color into their Home this Summer!  I am so excited to have Melanie from Reasons to Skip the Housework on my blog today, showing us how she adds color to her home using accent pillows!

When it comes to adding color to my home, I need a lot of help. My husband and I are both neutral lovers. We have a lot of beige, brown, tan, and black in our home. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the bright white with pops of color I see everywhere, but it's what we have, and I'm no millionaire, so changing things in major form are NOT happening around here!

To make the most of what I can, I love to add pops of color inexpensively, to try and jazz up my space a tiny bit. These fat quarter pillows are easy to make {especially if you're a non-sewer like me} and since you can choose any color fat quarter that you can find, you can easily match your current theme - but just add something with a few pops of color!

Fat Quarter Pillows

To make the pillows, all you need are six fat quarter panels. I used a plain creme on the backside, but you could easily use the same color on back and front, or matching patterns with different colors for a reversible pillow, of sorts!

I had three pillows lying around in a closet that weren't being used because they had hideous covers on them. They were the perfect size to cover with fat quarters! {a tiny bit smaller than a fat quarter, but I just trimmed the fabric and I was good to go!}

I am not a sewer at all, so there's not much to tell - it's simple really - you sew the wrong sides of the fabric together, leaving a hole on one side to stuff the pillow in! Turn the cover right side out when you are done sewing. Stuff the pillow into the cover, and then...sew the hole shut!

I used this tutorial from Amy at Positively Splendid to close up the hole with a ladder stitch.

She made it look:

A) easier than it was and B) prettier than mine ended up

These simple pillows are a great way to add pops of color to an otherwise drab and very "brown" room!
