How to make a Laundry Soap Dispenser

I had an idea for making a mason jar laundry soap dispenser I've been wanting to implement for a while, a stroke of genius that hit me somewhere between drifting off to sleep and dream-land one night.  And I knew that this would be the cutest way to organize my laundry supplies in my laundry room!  And I am so excited to finally put my idea into place!

My laundry room is a messy room!  I have baskets for dirty clothes, baskets for clean clothes, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies and a few other random things in there that have no other home. Our laundry room is a bit of a catch-all at the moment and it is driving me nuts!  It is on my list of places in my home to organize and something I definitely want to tackle while spring cleaning this year.

I am thrilled to show how to make a  mason jar laundry soap dispenser with DIY chalkboard tags.

Three laundry soap dispensers made from mason jar drink dispensers each with a chalkboard tag. Tags read Clorox, Soap, Softener

And of course you need to see what my laundry room soap containers looked like before.  A big mess.  It was functional...but it was not pretty.

So I went on a hunt for cute drink dispensers that weren't too big or too pricey!  And after a bit of searching, I found the cutest, mason jar style drink dispensers that were 1 gallon in size!  Perfect for a laundry soap dispenser!

You can purchase the same cute mason jar drink dispensers here.

I purchased 3 of these.  One each for my Laundry Detergent, my Color-Safe Clorox, and my Fabric Softener.

How to make DIY Chalkboard Tags to hang on these laundry soap dispensers.

I found cute wooden shapes at Michael's Craft Store for about 29-39 cents a piece.  I brought them home and drilled a small hole into the top of each of them.

After the hole was drilled, I painted them with Chalkboard Paint.  Be sure to follow the directions on cure times etc. when you use chalkboard paint.  I used Martha Stewart Chalkboard Paint and after I had two coats of paint on, they needed to cure for 24 hours prior to use.

Then you will prep your chalkboard surface by rubbing chalk all over it and then wiping it off!

I used a Chalk Marker to write on my labels, but a simple piece of chalk would work as well!

And with just a few minutes of my time and a few simple items, I turned a messy disorganized laundry room into a pretty space!!  Well, at least the laundry detergents are cute!

You may need to temporarily open the top of the jar so that it can vent!

I have never tried to make the opening larger. Have you tried opening the top of the container while dispensing to let air get in so it can vent?

You can also try brushing / washing the end of the spigot to make sure it is clean and clear of cloggs.

I bought a glass large drink dispenser for the same purpose of holding my liquid detergent. However, the detergent was to thick to come through the spout and then when I let go of the spout my detergent continued to drip. HELP!

I did actually! I know this is ages later, but I bought thick liquid stainless steel pouring spouts from Home Depot and installed them into my beverage dispensers. I have to clean them with hot water every time I buy a new detergent (I get mine from Grove), but it works way better than the plastic spouts that come with most beverage dispensers.

How do you measure the amounts? I use the measuring tops of the regular containers to judge amounts for different loads. I also would't want to use the same measuring container for softener and detergent. Thanks!

Our laundry room is also the cut through to our side porch and "friends and family" entrance, I'd love to dress it up. Have you had any issues with these particular Mason jars leaking? I wondered how well it would work since the detergent is thicker than drinks?

Hi There. I tried using the mason jar for my detergent and fabric softener and boy did I ever want it to work for me. It really didn't work 🙁 The consistency of the soaps I guess played a factor. I kept having to lean it over and maneuver it each time. Do you have any suggestions on better jars perhaps?

    Thanks so much.

Oh my I am so sorry to hear this did not work well for you. I agree it may be a soap consistency factor. I am not sure how different jars are made or if different jars would lend a different result to be honest...I haven't tried other brands of jars...so so sorry it didn't work out though 🙁

Could you include a link of where you purchased the mason jars at? I'd love to do this and was looking at the Del Sol Mason Jar Dispenser from Bed, Bath and Beyond but was curious where you purchased yours. (Especially since yours are still working great months later.) Also could you include what type of laundry soap you use? I use All Free and Clear and am wondering if it will be too thick (hey, I may just dilute it slightly with water).

Hi. Do you have to open the jar on top when using the tap? seeing that the lid closes hermetically makes me wonder if the liquids come out of it with easy or you have to open the jar in order for the tap to work...

Very pretty though would love to use it as well.

As for the thickness of the soap and softener I can see where that could be an issue. My appliance guy suggested a long time ago to water down the soap and the softener after I purchase them. I do that all the time. I buy the big bottles and fill them with warm water then shake gently before I use them.

Color safe Clorox bleach has hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes in the presence of light rendering it as useless as water in "bleaching" out stains. Hence, it's the reason why hydrogen peroxide is kept/sold/distributed in dark bottles. So, putting your color safe Clorox in a clear bottle is a very bad idea/move. We need to consider chemistry when handling household chemicals.

I just recently bought jars recently and my fabric softener has clogged up the spout. Do you have any recommendations on how to prevent that? My jars are the Pioneer Woman Drink Dispenser from Walmart and I absolutely love them but now that its stopped up it a pain. I thought maybe I could diluting the softener a little to help? (I haven't tried that yet since its full and I will have to clean the jar once its empty)

Hi! I personally didn't experience clogging in mine so I didn't have to try anything to fix that. But my suggestion would be to dilute it too. Let me know if that works well for you! And good luck!

Hi. Sometimes a vacuum is created when dispensing and you can open the lid to let air back into the container while dispensing and that can often help.

Thanks for the suggestion on the "Beverage Dispenser Replacement Spigot,Oak Leaf Stainless Steel Spigot Polished Finished, Dispenser Replacement Faucet". There were several reviews that referenced their thick detergents flowing nicely once they replaced their old ones with these. I just ordered 2 from Amazon and can't wait to try them. We were dreading going back to our old detergent containers.
