I love rustic decor!  Just a touch of that worn used look is right up my alley!  In fact I went scavenging with a sweet friend the other day through a  property that was sadly being demolished (don't worry we had permission) and I came home with an amazing barn door!  Seriously!!!!  I'm not quite sure what I am going to do with it, but it is going to be so fun trying to figure that out!  So the other day when I was at the craft store I found this really cute, small pre-made rustic pallet board, I knew I needed to take it home to make something with it.  Like many projects, the board was put "somewhere I'd remember"...and four months later, I found it again!  Oops.  Please tell me I'm not the only one who has done that.  Moving along...I had a really fun idea come to me the other day and I am really excited to share what I did with this blank little pallet board.  Come see my cute DIY Rustic Decor!

DIY Rustic Decor

Do you love it!?  I sure do.

And this was so simple to make too!  I promise!  Especially since the board was already created, I just had to make a stencil and paint it and I was done!

To create this, I used: (affiliate links)

  • Pallet board
  • Silhouette CAMEO or similar vinyl cutting machine
  • Vinyl
  • Transfer tape
  • Paint (Americana Multi-Surface Paint in Metallic Gold)
  • Foam Brush

First I selected what I wanted the board to say.  I decided that this little board would live in my office and so I wanted something inspirational.  But my board isn't too big so I needed something concise too.

As I thought about it I had a thought.  I am far from perfect, but every day I get up and try my best.  I try to be the best person, mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend I can be.  I try my best to live my religion and remember God in all I do.  I am far from perfect, but each day I try to help someone in need or brighten someone's day.  Each day I try to shine a little light in a dark corner of this work, I try to bring someone a little joy and I try to let my light shine.

I decided that I wanted to stencil "shine" on this board to remind me that even though I am rough and imperfect just like this pallet board is, I can still shine every day.  I might not do everything right all the time, but I can try to help bring a little glimmer of light or hope into someone else's life.

How to make Rustic Decor

So I choose a font, which I will be honest, was the hardest part of this whole project!  Sized it and cut it out of vinyl.  Then I removed the actual word from the vinyl so that I had a stencil to use!

I love using vinyl as a stencil!

Use vinyl as a stencil

I carefully placed my stencil onto my board using transfer tape and tried to rub the edges as best as I could to secure the vinyl down.  I knew that I would have a little leaking paint with this project because my boards were rough, but that was ok.  I didn't want a perfect looking final board, I wanted an imperfect board and rustic decor.

Paint

Then I used my foam brush and painted my word onto my board.

As soon as the word was painted, I lifted up my vinyl and let the board dry.

I love this DIY rustic decor and it looks amazing in my office space!

I really enjoy rustic decor also and love the simplicity of this sign. I like to use vinyl as a stencil for designs also and have searched for somewhere to get it in a variety of colors and different sizes, but haven't really found the right place. Thanks for the advice. I can't wait to check them out.
